This course is designed to provide the student with theoretical and technical introductory skills of a phlebotomist. Discussions include anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system, medical terminology, structures of the health care system and clinical laboratory, safety, types of laboratory analyses, specimen collection including techniques, equipment, sources of error, and medical legal issues surrounding the practice of phlebotomy. Forty (40) Classroom Hours and Ten (10) Observation Hours at a participating hospital.) Attendance is required in both settings.  Students who successfully complete this class will be eligible to sit for the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) examination offered by the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) at Stafford Technical Center in May, 2023.  (The cost of tuition includes all books and the end-of-program certification test fee from the National Healthcareer Association.)

When appropriate, referrals are made by STC program staff to local employers and government agencies that can assist eligible candidates in developing a strategy for employment.
