Stafford Student Elected SkillsUSA Officer

Sara Dunn, a 2nd year student at Stafford, was recently elected to a VT State Officer position for SkillsUSA.

She was a Health Careers student last year.  This year she is in the STEM Academy.

Stafford Technical Center Shines at Vermont Skills USA 2010 Competition

Stafford Technical Center is pleased to announce that 16 of their students were awarded medals at the recent Vermont SkillsUSA Competition.  SkillsUSA is a national non profit organization serving teachers, high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trades, technical, and skills service occupations including health occupations. Overall, there were 60 competitors in 30 different competitions.  Total earned by students in prizes and scholarships was $60,500.00.  Stafford  Technical Center has a local chapter of SkillsUSA.

The following students received medals in their competitions:  Architecture Design (Gold): William “Chad” Johnson-Mill River Union High School, Architecture Design (Bronze): Chad Martelle-Poultney High School; Automotive Refinishing and Technology (Gold) Shane Moyer-Rutland High School; Cabinet Making (Silver) Matthew Ely-Mill River Union High School; Culinary Arts (Silver)-David Sexton-Mill River Union High School; Gorilla Communications (Bronze) Amber Dumas -Rutland High School, Lindsey Brown -Mill River Union High School, Colin Terenzini -Rutland High School and Timothy Mumford -Mill River Union High School. Lowe’s Donates Tools to Stafford Technical Center as part of national Tough Tools for Cool Schools Program

Rutland, Vermont-June 8, 2009-Lowe’s and Kobalt Tools in partnership with SkillsUSA are helping the next generation of skilled trade professionals at Stafford Technical Center through their new Tough Tools for Cool Schools program. Lowe’s is donating approximately $600 worth of Kobalt tools to  Stafford as part of their new national program, which will total $300,000 to more than 500 SkillsUSA building trades and renovation programs across the nation for use in their classroom.

SkillsUSA Advisor John Bixby, was selected to receive the tool kit for the local Electrical/Plumbing Program at Stafford Technical Center. “This is a wonderful example of how industry works to partner with education, for the betterment of the technical program and to help ensure the success of my students,” said Bixby. “SkillsUSA has had a huge part in the transformation of my students because it provides skills and leadership training that they don’t get anywhere else. Lowe’s support just reinforces what we are teaching in the classroom and shows the value of education-industry partnerships.

“Lowe’s is proud to work with Kobalt Tools and SkillsUSA to continue to prepare America’s future skilled work force and help students in their chosen career paths,” said Larry Stone, Lowe’s President and Chairman of Lowe’s Charitable and Educational Foundation.

Kayla Perry, a second year student in Stafford Technical Center’s Music Technology; Jazz and Contemporary Program, has been selected to sing the National Anthem at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2009 SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference General Opening Session on June 23rd   at the Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri.  She performs in front of 8,000 to 10,000 people. Also, Kayla has the distinction of being the first Vermonter to sing the National Anthem at the Skills Conference Opening Ceremonies.

 

Kayla is a senior at Otter Valley Union High School in Brandon, Vermont.  She hopes to audition for the popular television show” American Idol “this fall, and eventually wants to attend a school with an emphasis on the performing arts.
