Students earn Gold, Silver, and Bronze at 2009 VT SkillsUSA Competitions

0418091119a2009skillsusavtphotos-021Stafford Technical Center is pleased to announce that 10 of their students were awarded medals at the recent VT SkillsUSA  Competition. SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers, high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trades, technical, and skills service occupations including health occupations.

The following students received medals in their competitions:

Kayla Perry, a student in Stafford’s Music Technology Program,sang the National Anthem at the Opening Ceremonies held at the Sheraton Hotel in Burlington. She was also selected to perform the same number in front of 10,000 people at the Opening Ceremonies of the National Skills and Leadership Conference to be held June 21-26 in Kansas City.

Stafford had 32 students participate in the  Vermont SkillsUSA Competition.  All of them are to be congratulated for their hard work and preparation.

Gold Medalists, Patty Danahy, Rebecca Hall, and Joshua McDonough are all eligible to compete at the National SkillsUSA Championships in June.

High School Student Inducted into second Honor Society

Vicky Stone, an Otter Valley senior and  second year Public Safety Services student at Stafford Technical Center, has the rare distinction of being inducted into a second scholastic honor society. Vicky. who will graduate from Otter Valley in June, 2009 was inducted last year into Stafford’s chapter of the National Technical Honor Society. 

She was also recently inducted into Otter Valley Union High School’s National Honor Society Chapter.  Requirements in both national honor societies include leadership, character, high grade point average, and ethical behaviors. In addition to maintaining excellent grades, Vicky will also graduate with 25 college credits from the College of St. Joseph that she earned through Stafford’s Public Safety Services Program.  She plans on attending Castleton State College in the fall of 2009.

Kayla Perry, a second year student in Stafford Technical Center’s Music Technology; Jazz and Contemporary Program, has been selected to sing the National Anthem at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2009 SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference General Opening Session on June 23rd   at the Kemper Arena in Kansas City, Missouri.  She performs in front of 8,000 to 10,000 people. Also, Kayla has the distinction of being the first Vermonter to sing the National Anthem at the Skills Conference Opening Ceremonies.

 

Kayla is a senior at Otter Valley Union High School in Brandon, Vermont.  She hopes to audition for the popular television show” American Idol “this fall, and eventually wants to attend a school with an emphasis on the performing arts.

DECA Competition Yields Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals

On March 4-6th, Stafford Technical Center Hospitality and Entreprenuership students participated in the annual Vermont Distributive Education Career Association (DECA) Conference.  Students participated in various events in which they can demonstrate their knowledge of marketing, merchandising, sales, human relations, and professional behavior.  Events include displays, public speaking, and role plays. The following students earned 14 gold, 7 silver and 4 medals and numerous Honorable Mentions.

STC DECA Students Place First In State Of Vermont In The 2nd Round Of The Virtual Business Challenge

Hospitality and Entrepreneurship Distributive Education Club of America ( DECA ) students at Stafford Technical Center recently participated in the national Virtual Business Challenge sponsored by Knowledge Matters, Inc.  The challenge was one of two that started on January 5th and ended on January 30th.  Teams Red Firecrackers, Brianna Allen and Kati Messer of Mill River Union High School, and The Finish Line, Stephen Bassett  from Otter Valley Union High School and Bethany Bushman of Rutland High School, placed first in Retailing and Sports, respectively,  for the state of Vermont. Merchandise Maniacs, Jenna Pelkey from Otter Valley Union High School and Ashley Bruno from West Rutland High School placed second in Retailing, while Uncommon Grounds, Christina Campo and Alison McLellan, both of Proctor High School came in fourth.

 

“The Retailing Track of the DECA Virtual Business Challenge ( VBC) encourages DECA members to test their skills at managing a retail convenience store. This competition is a free event for dues paying DECA members. Participating members utilize a competition version of the Virtual Business – Retailing classroom software, which is currently being used in over 4,000 classrooms in 50 states and Canada. Virtual Business is a software program that was created by Knowledge Matters. The initial feasibility research was funded by a U.S. Department of Education SBIR Contract.”
