Winter Carnival

Our Winter Carnival was a great success! Many students tried skiing or snowboarding for the very first time. Others were off and going the minute they got off the bus. Some students swam, or worked out, and even others chose to stay inside and visit, or work on a jigsaw puzzle. There was something for everyone.  A huge thank you from the Stafford community to Pico, and to Melissa Patterson who puts SO much work into this great day.

We have discussed how we might sponsor a bus of younger students, who are not yet at Stafford, to attend next year. Stafford helped sponsor the Girls in Engineering event at VELCO for students in grade 4. Melissa discussed the challenge of the Vermont State Colleges new student minimum of 5 in order to offer college credit. Lori Cillo will also be focusing on encouraging potential students to explore non-traditional programs. It was suggested that we also utilize community members as guest speakers or presenters to encourage non-traditional participation.
  5. STC Student Businesses
    1. Melissa presented a summary of existing businesses, including revenue from FY16. She is working with instructors to better track their business finances. We need to increase the level of involvement of students in the actual planning and running of the business. They need to learn how to sustain a business.

    2. Scott mentioned the need for HVAC and manufacturing.

College Visits

Part of the experience at Stafford is visiting colleges. Recently Culinary Arts and Forestry programs visited Paul Smiths College in New York.

Partnership with the Sheriff’s Office

For the annual Halloween Parade Stafford’s Public Safety and Criminal Justice  and Construction Technology program partnered with Rutland County Sheriff’s Office. With the support from the sheriff, and support from students, Vince and Larry (the crash test dummies) and MacGruff the Crime dog were able to take part in the parade.

Visitors!

Poultney 8th grade “Pathways” class visited 6 different programs  on October 11th. Here students work on some basil in the Culinary Arts Program.

Puzzle Building

STEM Academy students start building puzzle cubes. The cubes are used for gathering statistics on solving times, measuring activities, planning skills, sketching practice and many other educational purposes. They even get some fun out of it!
