The STEM Academy moves into its new home!

A little over three weeks ago our STEM Academy moved into its new home. The newly renovated lab space offers the program much needed expansion room; allowing the program to utilize both an advanced 21st century classroom environment and flexible open work space. The lab also gives Stafford the space to partner with our local FIRST robotics team. The FRC IBOTS team 2370 currently meets Thursday evenings in our STEM lab.

Recently STCN even broadcasted the weekly Rutland Update live from the lab. Check out the video and pictures below. Don’t miss our open house on March 5th starting at 5:00pm. It will be a great opportunity to explore the new lab and enter for some great raffles prizes.

Stafford Takes Third Place at the NECI Culinary Classic!

On Friday, November 14th nine teams from throughout the state competed in the seventh annual NECI Culinary Classic at City Hall in Montpelier!  First place went to St. Johnsbury Academy, second to Northwest Technical Center, and a tie for third between Stafford Technical Center and Southwest Vermont Career Development Center.  Teams of three students each had 90 minutes to prepare three different dishes: a white bean and vegetable soup, seared chicken breast with beurre blanc, herb risotto, and broccoli, and a crepe prepared using a seasonal mystery basket.

This is the first time Stafford placed in this competition.  Our competitors, Alyssa Czarnecki, Hunter Jakob, and Isabelle Hardina, each won a knife kit and a $1,000 scholarship to NECI.

Help for Haiti

On Friday, January 29th  Stafford Technical Center’s  Health Careers, Human Services, and Hospitality students held a bake sale to benefit the earthquake victims of  Haiti.

The students in Health Careers initiated the idea of this fundraiser. Students and staff brought in homemade treats and sold them in Campus Common Grounds (Stafford School Store)  and also during STC and Rutland High School lunch periods. Two hundred dollars was raised for this cause.   A special thanks to all who contributed to its success.

An exciting collaboration between the Slate Valley Teen Center in Fair Haven and Stafford Technical Center (STC)  has begun to develop as students from STC’s Architecture Engineering Design (AED) Program worked on the proposed teen center location under the supervision of architect, Mark McManus, of Middletown Springs.  STC second year students Chad Johnson and John Pluta, both from Mill River Union High School, spent time measuring, recording, and sketching the existing assembly space above the Fair Haven Municipal Offices.  This space originally housed the local high school, but has been unused for approximately 50 years.  The space boasts high ceilings, wood wainscoting, and tall windows, which bring in lots of natural light and wonderful views of the town green.  The Stafford AED students will have the opportunity to work on “as built” drawings which will be used in the development of a design for the center. This project has enabled the Stafford students to utlize their program skills in a “real world” application.

The proposed teen center will serve eleven surrounding towns and two high schools, Fair Haven Union High School and Poultney High School.

Their generous donation served as motiviation for students to score well on their financial tests.

These students names were drawn for the following prizes:

Wii Fit System: Stephen Bassett (Otter Valley Union High School)

Nintendo DS: Alison McLellan (Proctor High School)

MP3 Player: Jenna Pelkey (Otter Valley Union High School)

Stafford would like to thank the Heritage Family Credit Union for their generosity and for supporting financial literacy.  We also extend our gratitude to Katrina Kessop who has done a tremendous job as our “resident teller” at our STC Heritage Credit Union Branch.  Kessop instructs the Hospitality and Entreprenuership students how to properly handle money and assist customers with credit union transactions.
