Current Events
Two of our Stafford Engineering program students asked if Natural Resources could procure them some sugar maple lumber for an electric longboard project and aspen (poplar) for a project involving a set of skis."We were able to find some high quality ash lumber for the long board, since maple and ash are often interchangeable for everything from baseball bats to flooring.
However, we needed to hunt down an aspen tree on campus or in the city forest to help with the ski project.
On Friday, we found just the tree, that had uprooted behind the Alumni Field bleachers and was in the way for maintenance to mow. On Monday, we gathered up our equipment and safety gear and had our first timber harvest of the year. We cleared the area, limbed the top, and cut it into firewood for our sugarhouse. We taught the first-year students to use the winch and even skid a log with manpower instead of horse or diesel.
Tuesday morning, the engineering student spent the morning with Natural Resources sawing the lumber for his composite strips. We hope this project is all downhill from here!"
