This course introduces students to careers that require visual storytelling such as a video journalist, camera operator, television/film producer and director, video editor and on-camera talent such as an actor or news reporter. Students film live video productions, produce short films and create commercials for community non-profits and other clients. Students may have the opportunity to work on paid client projects and/or participate in local, state, and national video competitions. Students get experience using professional high-definition cameras, editing software, and audio devices, and working with clients in a variety of industries as a way to network and explore careers. Students who participate in this program get technical and workplace skills needed to seek further opportunities in college and in the professional world.

What We Do

Students will use state of the art technology to take part in all aspects of video productions. They will develop skills towards becoming one of the top video producers in the field. The skills will include planning, writing, shooting, editing, and distributing their finished products over a professional medium. Course content develops critical thinking skills, visual storytelling, problem solving and creative expression. Internships are also possible for advanced students.

Recommended Prerequisites: Proficient in grade level reading and writing standards; strong interpersonal skills; effective written and oral communication skills; ability to work as part of a team; comfortable using technology

Program Instructor – Cristina Kumka

Cristina Kumka started her career in broadcast journalism at Emerson College in Boston. While earning her degree, she contributed to WERS 88.9FM, the college’s award-winning radio station, as a host and volunteer producer, worked as a press assistant in the office of then-Boston Mayor Tom Menino, and as a production assistant for NECN. From 2008 to 2012 she wrote for the Rutland Herald covering statewide education issues and breaking news. She most recently worked as the government channel coordinator, technical director, videographer and manager at PEGTV in Rutland. She has been a contributor to Vermont Public Radio, local radio, The Mountain Times newspaper and often acts as a journalism consultant to local high schools and colleges.
