There is so much going on in and out of the Construction lab this spring. Starting with NRF collaborations, to help maple operations expand we did another post and beam, mortise and tenon project, with lumber originally from the city forest, expanding a clear roof off the shack. You’re missing out if you haven’t been out behind the shop during sugaring season!
First-year students are demonstrating framing knowledge with 3D CAD renderings and the build of a 10′ x 20′ shed with a gable dormer. The roof framing will be happening the week before break! The SkillsUSA Carpentry comp is possibly the most physically challenging of all. Other than a circular saw, everything is done by hand. Students build a “dog house” with 4 walls and a roof. They must do a stair stringer layout and a 40-question multiple choice building knowledge test. Congratulations to Bella Coombs and Nick Karpinsky for excellent finishes and bringing home a 3rd place medal!
